Surtur is the primordial fire giant and ruler of Muspelheim, a being of immense destructive power destined to bring about Ragnarok and the destruction of Asgard.
Surtur is one of the oldest beings in existence, a primordial entity born from the cosmic fires of Muspelheim. Long before the rise of Asgard, Surtur ruled over the fire demons of his realm, embodying destruction, chaos, and the inevitable end of all things. From the earliest ages, he stood in opposition to the Asgardian gods, particularly Odin and his predecessors.
Expand full history
Throughout the ancient wars between Asgard and Muspelheim, Surtur sought to expand his dominion beyond his fiery realm. These conflicts established a lasting enmity between Surtur and the rulers of Asgard, with Odin repeatedly acting to contain or banish him. Despite numerous defeats, Surtur was never permanently destroyed, instead retreating to rebuild his strength and prepare for the prophesied end of the gods.
Surtur’s ultimate goal has always been the fulfillment of Ragnarok—the destruction of Asgard and the Nine Realms. Central to this destiny is the Twilight Sword, a weapon of immense mystical power forged from the fires of Muspelheim. With it, Surtur possesses the ability to engulf entire worlds in flame.
In one of his most significant campaigns, Surtur amassed a vast army of fire demons and launched a full-scale invasion of Asgard. This assault culminated in a devastating battle against Odin and the Asgardian forces. Though Surtur was ultimately defeated and banished, the conflict demonstrated the true scale of his power and his ability to threaten all existence.
Surtur’s influence extends beyond direct warfare. His actions have shaped the history of multiple civilizations, including the destruction of entire worlds such as the Korbinite homeworld. His campaigns have left lasting scars across the cosmos, reinforcing his role as a force of universal destruction rather than a conventional conqueror.
Over the centuries, Surtur has returned repeatedly, each time closer to fulfilling his destiny. During one Ragnarok cycle, he succeeded in destroying Asgard, bringing about the end of that iteration of the realm. However, as with all Ragnaroks, the cycle eventually reset, allowing both Asgard and Surtur to rise again.
In more recent events, Surtur has continued to operate as a major cosmic threat. His power has been challenged by Thor in his role as All-Father, as well as by other cosmic forces. Despite temporary defeats, Surtur remains an ever-present danger, his existence tied to the fundamental cycle of destruction and rebirth that defines the Asgardian cosmos.
Unlike many villains, Surtur does not seek domination for its own sake. He represents inevitability—the end of all things through fire. His continued existence ensures that Ragnarok is not merely a myth, but an ever-approaching certainty.
Strength Level: Surtur possesses incalculable superhuman strength, far beyond that of most gods, increasing with his size and access to mystical flame energy.
Known Superhuman Powers: Surtur is a being composed of living mystical fire, granting him immense durability and resistance to nearly all forms of physical harm. He can generate and control vast amounts of flame and heat, capable of incinerating entire worlds. Through the Twilight Sword, Surtur can channel his power into devastating energy blasts and world-ending conflagrations. His size is variable, allowing him to grow to colossal proportions when empowered. He is effectively immortal, reforming even after apparent destruction, and his existence is tied to the eternal cycle of Ragnarok.
Other Abilities: Surtur commands vast armies of fire demons and possesses extensive knowledge of ancient magic and cosmic forces.

Limitations: Surtur’s power is often tied to the Twilight Sword and the energies of Muspelheim. While nearly unstoppable at full strength, he can be temporarily defeated or banished by beings of comparable cosmic power.
