The Klyntar are an extraterrestrial species of amorphous, symbiotic organisms capable of bonding with host lifeforms to create powerful composite beings. Often referred to simply as “symbiotes,” they are best known on Earth through individuals such as Venom and Carnage. While commonly associated with aggression and parasitism, the Klyntar were originally intended to be agents of balance, seeking to bond with worthy hosts and act as protectors across the cosmos.
The Klyntar originated as creations of the primordial god Knull, who forged them from living darkness to serve as instruments of conquest. Under his control, they spread across the cosmos as agents of destruction, overwhelming civilizations and expanding Knull’s dominion. This early period defined the species as one of terror and annihilation, bound to a singular will.

Over time, many symbiotes rebelled against Knull, imprisoning him within a constructed world formed from their own collective mass. Freed from his direct influence, the Klyntar began to redefine their purpose, seeking out hosts not merely for domination but for cooperation. This shift marked the beginning of their transformation into a species that, at least in part, pursued balance and protection rather than conquest.
Despite this evolution, not all symbiotes adhered to the new philosophy. Some, including the entity that would become Carnage, retained or rediscovered the violent tendencies of their origin. Others, such as the Venom symbiote, demonstrated the capacity for both destructive and heroic behavior depending on the nature of their host. This divergence created a species defined as much by individual variation as by shared origin.
The Klyntar eventually made contact with Earth, where their interactions with human hosts led to the emergence of some of the most well-known symbiotic beings. These encounters often resulted in unstable bonds, particularly when the host’s emotional state influenced the symbiote’s behavior. Earth thus became a focal point for both the potential and the dangers of the species.
In more recent cosmic events, Knull’s return to power once again threatened the balance the Klyntar had sought to establish. His resurgence reconnected many symbiotes to their original purpose as agents of darkness, leading to widespread conflict across the galaxy. The eventual defeat of Knull marked another turning point, leaving the future of the Klyntar uncertain as they continue to exist between their dual natures of creation and destruction.
