History: Carol Danvers entered the Air Force at
an early age and rapidly rose through the ranks to become
one of the leading agents in military intelligence. Following
her career as a spy, she was appointed NASA security chief
at Cape Canaveral, where she encountered the heroic Kree
Captain Mar-Vell. During a battle between Mar-Veil and
his Kree foe Yon-Rogg at a hidden Kree base on Earth,
Carol accidentally was irradiated by the unknown energies
of the Psyche-Magnitron, a device built by the Kree. The
radiation from this machine eventually augmented her entire
genetic structure -- granting her superhuman strength,
the ability to fly and a clairvoyant "seventh sense."
With these powers, she assumed the guise of Ms. Marvel
and established herself as a champion of Earth, even fighting
alongside the mighty Avengers for a brief period.
Concurrently,
Carol worked as a magazine editor and freelance writer
in New York City. In a battle with the power-absorbing
mutant named Rogue, Carol lost virtually all her Mr. Marvel
abilities, leaving her with only her augmented genetic
structure. Rogue also drained her memories, most of which
were restored by mutant mentor Charles Xavier. However,
Professor X could not return the emotional bonds linked
to those memories. During this period, Carol was a frequent
ally of the X-Men -- Xavier's team of masked, mutant heroes.
Later, Carol was abducted by the alien Brood and subjected
to an evolutionary ray that triggered the latent potential
of her augmented genes. Thus, she became the cosmically
powered mutate called Binary. No longer possessed of strong
emotional ties to people and places on Earth, Carol decided
to leave the planet and pursue new challenges as a member
of the spacefaring band of adventurers known as the Starjammers.
Returning to Earth some years later, Carol exhausted
her cosmic energies to save the sun. Her powers severely
depleted, she spent months recuperating at Avengers Mansion.
Now known as Warbird, she eventually rejoined the team.
Carol has overcome emotional emptiness, alcoholism, substantially
reduced power levels and a formal court martial before
her teammates to prove herself as an asset among Avengers.
