Historical Data

Michael Twoyoungmen is a physician and powerful Sarcee mystic who serves as Shaman, one of Alpha Flight’s founding members and one of Canada’s foremost magical defenders.

Michael Twoyoungmen was born in Calgary, Alberta, and was raised with some awareness of the spiritual traditions of his people, but in his youth he rejected mysticism in favor of medicine and reason. He became a highly respected physician and surgeon, building a successful practice and settling into domestic life with his wife Kathryn and their daughter Elizabeth. Although his aging grandfather urged him to accept the role of spiritual apprentice and inherit the shamanic knowledge of their line, Michael refused, convinced that modern science had rendered such beliefs obsolete.

That certainty collapsed when Kathryn fell terminally ill. Michael promised young Elizabeth that he would save her mother, but despite all of his medical skill he failed. Kathryn died, and on the same day Michael’s grandfather also passed away. Crushed by grief and guilt, Michael withdrew from society and isolated himself in a cabin in Banff National Park. There he experienced a vision of his grandfather’s spirit and at last opened himself to the mystical traditions he had denied. Under his grandfather’s guidance, Michael began studying the spiritual arts of his lineage and gradually transformed himself from a man of strict science into a mystic capable of communing with the spirits and drawing power from the unseen world.

Central to Michael’s growth as Shaman was the medicine pouch he inherited. The pouch served as a gateway to a pocket dimension from which he could draw mystical objects, potions, herbs, and other artifacts needed to perform feats of sorcery. As his discipline deepened, he became able to command spirits, work healing magic, and perceive supernatural disturbances. In time he was drawn northward by mystical forces, where he encountered the goddess Nelvanna and aided in binding her child Narya to Earth. Michael raised the rapidly maturing child as his own, and she would later become Snowbird.

When James MacDonald Hudson began organizing Canada’s national superhuman team, Alpha Flight, Michael and Narya were recruited as Shaman and Snowbird. As a founding member, Shaman brought a vital mystical dimension to the team, standing apart from his more physically oriented teammates. He served in many of Alpha Flight’s earliest major conflicts, especially against supernatural threats such as the Great Beasts of Canada, where his knowledge of spirits and sacred power often proved indispensable.

Michael’s relationship with his daughter Elizabeth remained deeply strained. Elizabeth had grown up bitter and resentful, believing her father had failed her mother and abandoned her emotionally after Kathryn’s death. Their unresolved grief and anger would eventually become central to one of the defining turning points in both their lives. When Elizabeth’s latent mystical potential awakened, Michael realized that she was destined to become Talisman, the latest vessel of an ancient spiritual mantle tied to their bloodline.

As Shaman, Michael repeatedly found himself torn between spiritual duty and ordinary human attachment. His failures as a father haunted him, and his mystical responsibilities often demanded sacrifices that deepened his isolation. At one point he lost much of his direct access to his power when Elizabeth claimed the Coronet of Enchantment and became Talisman, taking on a role that surpassed even his own position in the mystical hierarchy. Michael accepted this with a mixture of awe, regret, and recognition that his daughter’s destiny was larger than his own.

Over the years, Shaman continued to serve Alpha Flight through its many incarnations, government restructurings, and internal crises. He stood with the team through supernatural upheavals, political interference, and the collapse and rebirth of Canada’s superhuman programs. Though never the loudest or most public member, he remained one of Alpha Flight’s moral and mystical anchors.

Michael eventually suffered one of the most severe blows of his later life when he was killed during the crisis involving the Collective. Like several fallen Alpha Flight members, he was later restored to life, allowing him to return to the living world and resume his work. In the years that followed, he rejoined Alpha Flight and also took on a new role as an instructor at Strange Academy, where his long experience with magic and spirits made him an invaluable teacher to a new generation of mystically gifted students.

In more recent Canadian superhuman affairs, Shaman has continued to operate as part of Alpha Flight, even during periods in which the team was caught in political controversy and anti-mutant hysteria. Through all of these changes, Michael Twoyoungmen has remained defined by the tension between science and spirit, loss and duty, fatherhood and service. As Shaman, he is not merely a magician, but a healer, guide, and custodian of a sacred tradition that stretches across generations.
