History: Dr. Karla Sofen, a former associate and student of the criminal mastermind Dr. Faustus, used her profession to satisfy her craving for power and control over others. A noted psychiatrist, she was asked to help cure Byron Becton, the original Moonstone. Using hallucinogenic gas to make Becton think she was a monster, Sofen caused him to reject the moonstone -- a rock taken from the Blue Area of the Moon and believed to be invested with some of the Watcher's power. When she took the rock from him and absorbed it into her hand, she assumed the energy abilities that were his.

When most of Earth's heroes, including the Avengers and Fantastic Four, seemingly died battling Onslaught, Sofen joined forces with Baron Zemo. To gain the trust of the populace, the villains led the world to believe that they were new heroes known as the Thunderbolts. Zemo's plan failed, but Sofen and other members decided they preferred being good guys, and set out to make the Thunderbolts a legitimate super-hero team.

After the team broke with Baron Zemo, Sofen assumed leadership of the Thunderbolts. But since Hawkeye's arrival, she has returned to her role as second-in-command.
