Leir
Real Name:
Leir Occupation: God of lightning and the spear Identity: The general populace of Earth believes Lair to be a
fictional character. Legal Status: Citizen of Avalon Other Aliases: None known Place of Birth: Unrevealed, presumably Avalon Marital Status: Unrevealed Known Relatives: Danu (father) Group Affiliation: The Celtic gods of Avalon Base of Operations: Avalon First Appearance: Thor #386
History: Leir is one of the leaders of the race of Celtic
gods, who were worshipped by the Celts in the British Isles in ancient times,
and who reside in an otherdimensional realm known as Avalon.
(It has not yet been disclosed what connection Leir's race may have to the godlike
beings known as the Fomor, who also inhabit an otherdimensional realm known
as Avalon, or to the faerie of Celtic myth, who included such beings as the
half-human sorceress Morgan Le Fey and the Light and Dark Elves of the Nine
Worlds of Asgardian cosmology). For ages
enmity existed between the Celtic gods and the gods of the realm of Asgard.
The Heliopolitan death god Seth dispatched beasts resembling black winged lions
to ravage the countryside of Avalon. One of these beasts was also sent to Asgard,
where it slew a helpless family. Before dying, the last member of the family
asked Thor, prince of Asgard, to avenge
their deaths. Thor pursued the beast through an interdimensional portal into
Avalon. There a number of the members of the race of Celtic gods accused Thor
of responsibility for the killing of a family of farmers (in actuality, the
beast was responsible for these deaths). Leir arrived and battled Thor. Thor's
ally Hogun the Grim followed Thor through the interdimensional portal to offer
his help. Then Leir and Thor saw the winged beast, and Leir realized that it
was the true killer, not Thor. Together Leir, Thor, and Hogun battled the creature.
Mortally wounded, the beast fled through the interdimensional portal. Leir remained
in Avalon while Thor and Hogun returned to Asgard through the portal. Back in
Asgard, they found that their friends Fandral and Volstagg had slain the beast.
Leir believed that he owed Thor a debt for helping the Celtic gods against
the winged monster. Therefore, Leir later led a force of Celtic gods to Asgard
to help the Asgardians battle the invading armies of Seth. With the Celtic gods'
help, the Asgardians proved victorious in the war.
Height: 7 ft. 2 in. Weight: 575 lbs. Eyes: Blue Hair: Reddish brown
Strength Level: Leir possesses superhuman strength in the
Class 100 range, enabling him to lift (press) over 100 tons. (In contrast, the
average male Celtic god can lift (press) about 30 tons).
Known Superhuman Powers: Leir possesses the conventional superhuman
physical attributes of the Celtic gods. Like all the members of his race, Leir
is extremely long-lived (although not immortal like the Olympians, who do not
age after reaching maturity), superhumanly strong, and immune to all terrestrial
diseases. (The flesh and bone of the Celtic gods is about three times denser
than similar human tissue, contributing to the Celtic gods' superhuman strength
and weight). Leir is also highly resistant to injury by conventional means.
As a member of the race of Celtic gods, Leir's metabolism gives him superhuman
endurance in all physical activities.
In addition, Leir can generate electrical energy in the form of a lightning-like
spear from his hands. He can hurl such spears as weapons. Thrown with his superhuman
strength, the spears can shatter virtually any substance.
