Dark Beast is the twisted counterpart of Henry McCoy from the Age of Apocalypse reality (Earth-295), a dystopian world ruled by the mutant tyrant Apocalypse. Unlike his Earth-616 counterpart, who is defined by compassion and ethics, Dark Beast represents the complete corruption of Hank McCoy’s intellect and scientific ambition.
Raised in a brutal world where survival often depended on strength and loyalty to Apocalypse, McCoy abandoned morality early in his life, embracing experimentation without restraint.
Expand full history
As one of Apocalypse’s leading scientists, Dark Beast conducted horrific genetic experiments on both humans and mutants. His work was instrumental in the regime’s efforts to control and manipulate mutantkind, often involving torture, dissection, and forced mutation. Unlike the noble pursuit of knowledge seen in Earth-616’s Beast, Dark Beast pursued science solely for power and curiosity, with no regard for ethics or suffering.
During the collapse of the Age of Apocalypse timeline, Dark Beast managed to escape into Earth-616, becoming one of the few refugees from that reality. Once there, he attempted to integrate himself into the reality, initially masquerading as the original Beast in order to avoid detection.
Eventually exposed, Dark Beast became a recurring antagonist to the X-Men. He continued his experiments in secret, often targeting mutants and exploiting advanced technology to further his research. His knowledge of alternate timelines and mutation made him particularly dangerous, as he possessed insights that others did not.
Dark Beast frequently clashed with the X-Men, especially with his Earth-616 counterpart, whom he viewed as weak and hypocritical. His presence served as a constant reminder of what Hank McCoy could have become under different circumstances.
Over time, Dark Beast’s schemes grew increasingly unstable and self-destructive. His obsession with experimentation and control ultimately led to his downfall. He was eventually killed, though like many figures in Marvel continuity, his death has been subject to the complexities of cloning, alternate realities, and scientific resurrection.
Dark Beast stands as one of the most disturbing alternate versions of a Marvel hero, embodying the dangers of unchecked intellect and the loss of moral restraint.
Strength Level: Dark Beast possesses superhuman strength comparable to or exceeding that of Beast, enabling him to lift several tons.
Known Superhuman Powers: Enhanced strength, agility, speed, endurance, reflexes, and heightened senses. His physiology is more feral and resilient than his Earth-616 counterpart.
Other Abilities: Genius-level intellect; master geneticist; expert in mutation manipulation, cloning, and experimentation.

Limitations: His instability and obsession often undermine his long-term plans.
Dark Beast relies primarily on advanced laboratory equipment, genetic manipulation technology, and experimental weaponry created through his research.
