Edward Pasternak, known as Tower, is a mutant mercenary capable of drastically altering his size and mass, who operated as a member of Apocalypse’s Alliance of Evil.
Edward Pasternak was born in Atlanta, Georgia, though little is known about his early life or the circumstances surrounding the emergence of his mutant abilities. By the time he first came to prominence, Pasternak had already established himself as a mercenary, selling his services as a physically powerful operative.
Expand full history
One of his earliest recorded activities involved employment by the biochemist Dr. Carl Maddicks, who hired him to capture the mutant Beast. Tower successfully located and subdued McCoy, but was later betrayed and defeated during the subsequent confrontation with X-Factor. Despite being offered a place with the team, Tower rejected the offer and continued his mercenary career.
Shortly thereafter, Pasternak joined the Alliance of Evil, a group assembled by Apocalypse to test the strength and usefulness of mutant operatives. Within the group, Tower served as a heavy assault combatant, using his size-altering abilities to overwhelm opponents. Through Apocalypse’s manipulation of the mutant Michael Nowlan, Tower and his teammates experienced artificially amplified power levels, which led to a degree of dependency on Nowlan’s abilities.
The Alliance of Evil engaged in multiple conflicts with X-Factor, including attempts to capture Rusty Collins and control Nowlan. These confrontations culminated in a battle in which Nowlan’s powers spiraled out of control, resulting in a catastrophic energy discharge that led to his death. In the aftermath, Tower and the surviving members of the Alliance were taken into custody.
Following his release, Tower continued to operate intermittently with the remnants of the Alliance of Evil. The group resurfaced during the period surrounding the Mutant Registration Act, staging a televised attack that again brought them into conflict with X-Factor. Despite initially overpowering their opponents, the Alliance was ultimately defeated.
Some time later, Tower traveled to El Salvador, where he was targeted and killed by the mutant-hunting vigilante known as the X-Cutioner. His death marked the apparent end of his activities.
However, during the Necrosha event, Tower was among the many deceased mutants resurrected through the use of the Transmode Virus under the control of Selene and Eli Bard. Reanimated as part of Selene’s army, Tower returned briefly to conflict with the X-Men before the Necrosha forces were ultimately defeated.
Following the collapse of Selene’s forces, Tower’s ultimate fate remains unclear, though he is presumed to have either been destroyed again or returned to a dormant state.
Strength Level: Variable. At normal size, Tower possesses the strength of a man of his age, height, and build. When enlarged to his maximum height of approximately 15 feet, his strength increases to at least twice that level, with proportional increases in durability.
Known Superhuman Powers: Tower can mentally alter his size, shrinking to approximately one inch in height or growing to a maximum of roughly 15 feet. His strength and durability increase proportionally with his size. The exact relationship between his mass and volume is unknown.
Other Abilities: Experienced mercenary; capable of tactical combat and infiltration.
Expand full details
Tower’s abilities function similarly in concept to size-altering powers exhibited by other individuals, allowing him to adapt to different combat scenarios. At smaller sizes, he may evade detection or access confined spaces, while at larger sizes he becomes a physically imposing combatant.
Limitations: His power appears limited to a defined size range, and he lacks additional abilities beyond physical enhancement. Larger forms may reduce agility, while smaller forms likely reduce strength correspondingly.
Tower does not typically use weapons.
