The Knights of X were a short-lived but pivotal strike force of mutant champions assembled during the Krakoan era to reclaim and stabilize Otherworld following a period of profound multiversal upheaval.
Expand full history
In the wake of the X of Swords conflict, the relationship between Krakoa and Otherworld became increasingly unstable. Mutant resurrection protocols were compromised within Otherworld, and political control of the realm fell under the increasingly authoritarian rule of Merlyn and King Arthur. These developments created a volatile situation that threatened not only mutantkind, but the balance of realities connected through the Starlight Citadel.
Betsy Braddock, serving as Captain Britain, emerged as a central figure in opposing this regime. Recognizing that conventional approaches would not suffice, Betsy formed a specialized team—later known as the Knights of X—composed of individuals uniquely suited to operate within the mystical and unpredictable environment of Otherworld.
Unlike traditional superhero teams, the Knights of X functioned as a quest-driven unit, guided by prophecy, arcane knowledge, and the shifting political landscape of Otherworld. Their mission was not merely to fight enemies, but to restore mutant access to Otherworld, challenge the authority of Merlyn and Arthur, and reestablish balance across the multiversal nexus.
The team undertook a perilous journey across the fractured realms of Otherworld, navigating hostile territories, confronting enchanted adversaries, and uncovering hidden truths about the nature of mutant magic and destiny. Along the way, they encountered allies and enemies shaped by centuries of myth and alternate realities.
Central to their quest was the Siege Perilous, a mystical artifact capable of granting passage and transformation. Through trials of worthiness and sacrifice, members of the team faced deeply personal challenges that tested their identities and loyalties.
Ultimately, the Knights of X succeeded in disrupting Merlyn’s control and reshaping the power structure of Otherworld. However, the team itself was never intended to be permanent. With their mission complete and the immediate crisis resolved, the Knights of X disbanded, their legacy enduring as a defining chapter in the evolution of mutantkind’s relationship with the multiverse.
