History: Born Jimaine Szardos, Amanda Sefton grew up with her foster brother, Kurt Wagner, now the X-Man known as Nightcrawler, in Der Jarrmacht traveling circus. The two fell in love, but Amanda stayed behind to study the mystic arts when Kurt left to find adventure. Amanda and Kurt lost touch with one another, until they met in New York and renewed their relationship. Amanda did not reveal her abilities to Kurt until the powerful sorceress Margali, her mother and his foster mother, threatened Nightcrawler's life. Margali blamed Kurt for killing her son, Stefan, relenting only when she discovered her son had turned evil.

While Kurt was a member of Excalibur, Amanda helped the British super-team on its missions. When Illyana Rasputin, the original Magik, died, she gave teammate Shadowcat her Soulsword, a magical weapon created from the darkest part of Magik's soul during her stay in Limbo. However, the Soulsword began to corrupt Shadowcat. Amanda saved her friend from the weapon's dark powers, convincing Shadowcat to give her the Soulsword. She then entrusted the implement to her mother. Margali, slightly insane at the time, used the Soulsword to murder those ahead of her on the Winding Way, a mystical path followed by many magicians on which each conjurer takes a turn being powerful, then powerless, until returning to a position of greater power. Margali then joined the London Hellfire Club, whose members were planning to destroy the city and take over Britain. Amanda left Excalibur after helping defeat her mother and the Hellfire Club, claiming she didn't feel right due to the changing currents of power on the Winding Way.

Belasco, the powerful demon sorcerer who ruled Limbo, captured Margali following her defeat. But the sorceress switched bodies with Amanda to recuperate, regain her freedom and win back her position on the Winding Way. Margali eventually made her way back to Limbo, where mother and daughter returned to their rightful bodies and defeated Belasco. Amanda became the Mistress of Limbo, taking the name Magik to confuse her foes' spells.
