Jones
Real Name: Gabriel Jones Occupation: Former Jazz trumpet player former soldier, now agent
of S.H.I.E.L.D. Identity: Publicly known Legal Status: Citizen of the United States with no criminal record Other Aliases: Number 9 of the Secret Empire Place of Birth: New York City Marital Status: Unrevealed Known Relatives: Bill (uncle, presumably now deceased) Group Affiliation: Former member of the Howling Commandos, now
agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Base of Operations: New York City and S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. First Appearance: SGT FURY AND HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS #1
History: Gabriel Jones grew up in New York City and won acclaim
at an early age as a jazz trumpet player. Jones was coached in trumpet playing
by the legendary Louis Armstrong himself. Jones's Uncle Bill owned a nightclub
in Manhattan and presumably Gabe Jones played in the band there
Jones eventually entered the army under circumstances that have yet to be recorded.
His skill and bravery as a soldier came to the attention of Colonel
Sam Sawyer and G-2 (Army intelligence), who were organizing the special
commando unit that became known as the Howling Commandos, led by Sergeant Nick
Fury. Jones was selected to become a member of the Howling Commandos and
served with them throughout World War II (Apparently Sawyer was ahead of his
time in his attitude towards race, for other army units were not integrated
during World War II. Hence, it was highly unusual for Jones, a black man, to
be assigned to the Howling Commandos which was otherwise composed entirely of
white men.)
Jones re-enlisted in the army after the outbreak of the Korean War and was
assigned to the reunited Howling Commandos. Jones joined the Howlers again,
as a civilian, for a special mission in Vietnam during the 1960s.
It is not definitely known what Jones did during the years after World War
II when he was neither involved with the Howlers or with the
law enforcement and intelligence agency S.H.I.E.L.D.
Presumably he continued his career as a jazz musician.
It is also not known how Jones came to join S.H.I.E.L.D., but presumably he did so
after his former sergeant, Nick Fury, was made its Public Director. Jones became
one of Fury's closest aides, assisting him in running the entire organization
and acting as an operative on major missions. Jones's most celebrated solo assignment
was his infiltration of the first subversive organization known as the Secret
Empire, which he succeeded in defeating, from within.
At one point in recent years Jones said that he was engaged to marry Carla
Williams, whom he had met during World War II when she was performing as a nightclub
singer under the name Carla Swain. Jones was assigned to rescue her from Nazi-occupied
Paris, and he and the Howlers saved her life from a Nazi officer. For a time
Jones was also romantically involved with Peggy Carter, a former member of the
French Resistance. It is not known whether Jones ever marred either of these
women or someone else. At present however, Peggy Carter is unmarried
Jones was one of the few high ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who was not killed and
replaced by one of the artificially created human beings called the Deltites.
Even after the Deltite leader had Fury declared to be a traitor to S.H.I.E.L.D., Jones
remained loyal to Fury. Finally, Fury and others defeated the Deltites and Fury
persuaded the United Nations disband S.H.I.E.L.D.
Jones was one of the agents who accompanied Fury in traveling through the world,
closing down S.H.I.E.L.D. offices, discharging their remaining personnel and destroying
S.H.I.E.L.D.'s more dangerous technology.
Since then, Jones has become a member the new, efficient S.H.I.E.L.D. organization
that Fury founded to take the place of its predecessor.

of a man of his age, height, and build who engages n moderate regular exercise.

in his prime. He is an excellent marksman with a rifle. Jones has considerable
knowledge of commando tactics. He is highly skilled in espionage and in the
infiltration of enemy organizations Jones is unequaled as a jazz trumpeter.
