History: Little is known about the psionic mutant known as the Gamesmaster before he decided to entertain himself by forming the Upstarts. The Upstarts are a group of humans and mutants who were vying for leadership of their own group and were given points for assassinating mutant figures. The Upstarts included Shinobi Shaw, Siena Blaze, Fabian Cortez, Graydon Creed, Trevor Fitzroy, and the Fenris Twins Andrea and Andreas Strucker. The Upstarts were responsible for the death of the Hellions and the apparent deaths of Magneto and Sebastian Shaw.

During the competition, the Gamesmaster initiated the Younghunt, in which the goal was to capture the surviving members of the New Mutants and the Hellions, which included members of X-Force and the New Warriors. The hunt resulted in the capture of the mutants Cannonball, Meltdown, Karma, Moonstar, Empath, and the New Warriors member Firestar. The New Warriors and X-Force traveled to the Swiss Alps where their teammates were being held and were attacked by the Gamesmaster, who was controlling the captured mutants. The two teams would have been destroyed if not for the intervention of Cannonball's sister Paige, a mutant herself, who challenged the Gamesmaster to a game to determine who would lead the next generation of mutants. The Upstarts have not worked in a group since their defeat at the hands of the two teams.

The Gamesmaster next appeared possessing a young boy named Jeremy at the Weisman Institute for the Criminally Insane where he encountered the mutant Siryn and Deadpool. It was later revealed that the Gamesmaster was in mental control of the entire Institute. The purposes for which he has controlled the Institute have yet to be revealed.
